COLD WINTER AND SOARING PRICES

When the winter gets this harsh, life can be quite difficult. When it becomes all the more expensive, the trouble adds up no ends. Even as a major part of the population is struggling with their finances to meet with their daily needs, the mammoth task of paying the gas and energy bills at the end of the month can be all the more trying. In fact, it is estimated that households are going to be shelling out as much as £650 on their gas and electricity bills.

This sum is again for the coming three months itself. The alarming thing being the fact that this sum is a good £100 increased when compared with last year. Add to this most of the energy and gas providers are also increasing their prices which is simply not helping matters one bit. Amidst this, even npower has made a 5.1 per cent price increase which will now have to be dealt with by its gas and electricity customers. This means as much as £54 more to be paid to the yearly average bill. British Gas, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern are the other leading names that have gone in with similar price hikes as well.

This apart, it’s only EDF that has given some respite to its customers by stating that it will not increase its prices but rather freeze them at least until the 31st of March 2011. This price hike has actually seen Wholesale gas prices reach their maximum in the past two years. This is going to increase all the more by as much as ten percent in the year later on. For once, people are busy running around trying to do as much of savings as possible. People could do well with checking thoroughly and keeping a sharp tab on what and how much they are using. This is by checking with the supplier with the meter reading or going online for that matter.

Energy Smart from the house of British Gas is a good way to do savings for their subscribers, thus by getting an idea as to what will a subscriber’s next bill be. One may simply put his current meter reading online and instantly get a good enough prediction as to what his next bill will be. The increased VAT isn’t going to help matters either.

Then there are the energy comparison sites like Energyhelpline, Moneysupermarket and uSwitch. Here one may simply get a compete idea of his or her overall annual gas and energy bill. Then of course as much as forty percent of our yearly bills comprise of the winter season. One may think of switching over to another supplier who is offering a better deal. Energy regulator Ofgem states that a good half of the homes in England haven’t even thought of switching over to a new supplier.
